«l will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh» (Ezekiel 11:19).

The greatest danger of disobedience is that it separates us from God. Disobedience is a declaration of independence. Imagine what would happen if the inhabitants of a province told the rest of your country: «From now on we will be a sovereign nation.» Better yet, imagine what would happen if a kidney told the rest of your body: «I’m independent and I don’t need you.» By disobeying, we declare our independence from the Creator and Sustainer. In other words, we’re saying, «l don’t need you and I can manage very well on my own.» Of course, this attitude can only lead to death.

When we voluntarily choose to separate ourselves from God, we block the flow of His transforming love. In England where I live, the electric plugs have an on/off switch (similar to a light switch). When I moved to this country, I would sometimes plug in my cell phone to charge without verifying that the switch was on. Thus, even if I left it charging for hours, my phone’s battery was still as dead as it was at the beginning. Separated from Jesus, we can do nothing! Without Him, not only do we not have energy, so to speak, but sin also begins to make us implode and corrode the foundations of our character.

In his article «The Three Lies We Believe by Sinning,» Gerson Morey wrote, «Sin clouds our vision of God, hardens our hearts, and undermines our trust in the Lord. Sin produces disbelief, reduces our taste for heavenly things, numbs us to evil, and makes us more unclean.» Our only hope is to admit our total and complete dependence on Jesus. We must surrender, give up our weapons, and receive His abundant and regenerative forgiveness.

Lord, free me from my rebellion. Save me from myself!
Today I give up my weapons and my pretensions of independence.
Separated from You, there is absolutely nothing I can do. I need Your Spirit to permeate my heart fully and transform me. I need a miracle!
But because You specialize in removing hearts of stone and transplanting hearts of flesh—tender and receptive—I know I’m in good hands.
I want to obey You, Lord. Please give me a new spirit. Thank You for loving me enough to do this. Amen.
