Pastor Alex Thomson steered his forty-five-foot mission launch over the pounding waves. He and his crew were caught in a violent riptide off northern Tanna in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). Captain Thomas knew that if they got sideways to the waves, the boat would capsize and put everyone’s life in Jeopardy.
Suddenly the engine began making a frightening noise. The engineer knew at once that not enough fuel was getting to the carburetor. He and the pastor hurried to see what they could do. «Filter’s clogged,» the engineer called out. «Second filter shot too. Dirt is blocking the flow.»
«Remove the fuel line and fix it, quickly!» the captain ordered. Then he sent a prayer heavenward. «Please, God, keep the engine running.»
With the fuel line disconnected, fuel had absolutely no way to get to the engine. The men worked furiously, knowing that the chugging, clunking motor was using up any gas left in the carburetor and feeder lines. At any moment the engine would die, leaving the launch powerless to maneuver in the fast-flowing tide. But it kept running and running, slowly, with just enough push to keep the rudder effective against the rush of water under the stern.
«Got It,» shouted the engineer. As he slipped the pipe back into place, the engine coughed, became silent, and then roared to life as fresh fuel flowed into the carburetor.
Pastor Thomson breathed normally again, thanking God for the engine that run «without fuel.»
