“I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall grow like the lily,
And lengthen hos roots like Lebanon. His branches shall spread;
His beauty shall be like an olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon”
(Hose 14:5, 6)
ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, I witnessed how a tree is planted. I remember one that my father brought from a greenhouse: it was so small and weak. With almost paternal care, he buried it deep in ground he had chosen beforehand, where it could take root; that was the beginning of his life and his mission. Over time, the weak little tree was gaining strength. On windy and rainy nights, he stirred bravely, but he did not fall; at dawn, when the sun rose, it was straight and firm as before the storm.
Little by little, the branches of that small and weak tree grew strong and expanded, sheltering in them some birds and quite a few insects. The day the first flowers came out, it looked beautiful and imposing; then, my father announced that, in the following season, it would bear the first fruits. So it was: the following summer, with unparalleled delight, we had the harvest of the first apricots. What a wonder of nature!
Did you know that we are like trees? In fact, you can choose which one you want to look like. The Lord says that He has set us to bear fruit, just as a tree does. To achieve this, it is important to establish ourselves in our roots. Only then, in stormy weather, will we stand up. The roots are the deep connections that we make with God through a life of prayer, reflection and study of his Word.
Rooted in Christ, you will be able to spread your branches and you will see that many will take shelter under its foliage. When the first flowers adorn your personality with kindness, kindness, sympathy and joy, and produce fruits that honor the Creator, you will be an instrument of peace and comfort for the hopeless. At that time, don’t neglect your dependence on Christ. Make sure your roots continue to grow inward, deep, where they can be nurtured by God’s perfect love and truth.
Then, and only then, will you be fulfilling the mission for which you were planted in Christ.
