«Children are a heritage from the Lord” (Psalm 127:3).
AFABLE TELLS that an eagle was talking to his friend the owl, who asked him a favor as a brother: «Please, do not eat my babies.»
«Describe your little ones to me,» the eagle asked, «so I don’t eat them.» «My offspring are the most precious creatures in the forest. They are large and beautiful, have very expressive crystal-clear eyes, seem to be illuminated by the moon, and their beaks have soft, majestic lines. Their feathers blend with the most beautiful foliage of the night,» the owl answered.
THE eagle took off toward the most remote peaks, keeping in mind the owl’s request. When he felt hungry, he went to search for food. He looked everywhere and discovered a group of small birds, half bald, with ugly round faces, and thought that he could eat them, since they were not the owl’s offspring. One day, the owl complained to him in tears:
«Why did you eat my little children?
You promised you wouldn’t do that!
You betrayed me!»
«But . . . I ate the ugliest ones;
they could not possibly have been yours!» the eagle replied.
No one sees his or her children as being ugly, and this is correct. Where we go wrong is when we make them into idols—considering them the most beautiful, the most intelligent, the best, and raising them in such a way that they become spoiled, arrogant, and proud, insensitive to the needs of others and feeling entitled to everything. That is the mistake made by many mothers, specifically one named Cristina. Cristina thought like the owl in the fable. Her daughter seemed to her to be the best, the most beautiful, the most intelligent. However, one day, that child, already grown into a young woman, left her shell for the exterior world only to discover that she was not as unique and special as she had been made to believe. She failed miserably, since she did not know how to adapt to reality.
Your children are a rich blessing that God has given you. It is your privilege to be able to guide them in their ways and to see the power of the Lord manifested in them. God wants your children to be as sculptured pillars (see Psalm 144:12), as arrows in the hand of a warrior (Psalm 127:4). Help them to become just that, educating them with simplicity, humbleness, and self-control. Teach them Christian values.
