«And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, «I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake» (Genesis 26:24).
Isaac was so prosperous in Gerar that the king asked him to move farther away. His response is an example for us in times of provocation. He did not respond with vengeance against those who provoked him; he let God defend his case.
Three times he and his servants had to dig new wells to avoid a confrontation (see Genesis 26:19—22). How willing are you to renounce promotions or benefits in order to avoid conflicts? Ask for the wisdom to know when to peacefully retreat. As Isaac continued to prosper, he aroused jealousy and quarrels among the Philistines. When you prosper in certain aspects of your life, someone will undoubtedly feel jealous of you too.
Isaac was a successful man, but he had some fears. That is why God confirmed the pact that He had made with his father, Abraham. Take your successes to God and all your fears will dissipate. When the Philistines were reassured by Isaac’s peaceful attitude and his evident prosperity, they had no other choice than to humbly ask for a peace treaty. Isaac responded to it promptly and transformed their meeting into a full celebration
«When a man’s ways are pleasing to God, even his enemies will be at peace with him (Proverbs 16:7) In spite of the injustice that Isaac had suffered at their hands, he, being a peace-loving man, was happy to conclude a new pact of friendship with Abimelech . . . .The fact that there had been no violence when Abimelech’s servants ruined several wells and robbed Isaac of at least two others was due solely to Isaac’s peaceful retreat. Though Isaac could not forget these bitter experiences, he did not mention them. His was a great heart, a magnanimous spirit.»— SDA Bible Commentary, vol. I, 373, 374.
If we maintain a peaceful attitude, our adversaries will finally take note of it. If those who once badgered you at every turn now come to you in search of peace and reconciliation, receive them with the attitude of Isaac. Don’t only offer them forgiveness, but celebrate the occasion in which you have gained new friends.
Today, make a list of people with whom you need to reconcile. Pray over the list, and take the first step. God will reward you.
