«None of them will be able, in any way, to redeem his brother or pay his ransom to God (for the redemption of his life is of such a high price that it will never be achieved)» (Psalm 49: 7-8).
On August 5, 2010, a landslide at the San José mine buried thirty-three miners at a depth of 700 m. The site, located 30 km northwest of the Chilean city of Copiapó, collapsed, preventing all types of communication. However, a rescue plan was started immediately to free those buried in the fastest and safest way possible. Through a simple probe, seventeen days after the incident, it was possible to transmit the precious message: «The 33 of us are doing well in the refuge,» filling an entire country with hope. Greater was the hope inside the mine, when the miners were informed of the costly rescue that was being planned in their favor. The Chilean government announced that it would spare no expense to rescue them, reaching the total cost of the operation at twenty-two million dollars. With a rock drill that advanced 20 meters every 24 hours, it was possible to open a gap 70 cm wide through which, on October 13, 2010, seventy days after the tragedy, the rescue was carried out. A rescuer had to descend to the depths to make the rescue possible. More than a billion viewers witnessed such a successful release.
How many similarities does this rescue have with the one that God performed on our behalf! It was a tragedy that the human race was buried under the weight of sin. As a consequence, communication between heaven and earth was hampered. But an immediate rescue plan was put in place to free the fallen race. First, it was necessary to open a path that would restore communication and by which they were later released. There was no (and still does not exist with respect to salvation) any way to save oneself with one’s own means. Can you imagine the thirty-three miners struggling to reach the surface? Without outside intervention, the company was destined to fail. They could not even have somehow paid for the rescue operation (because the ransom of his life was of such a high price that they would never have succeeded).
Let us praise God on this day, because in Christ, we have the way open to the throne of God. Because he descended into the world to rescue us and ultimately bore all the expenses of our salvation.
You cannot save yourself no matter how hard you try, but you can express gratitude to the one who, with kindness and mercy, acted promptly on your behalf.
