«‘My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, ‘ says the Lord. ‘And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine'» (Isaiah 55.8, NLT).

In her book Discovering Hope in the Psalms, Pam Farrell says that when her husband was diagnosed with cancer, she feared their lives would no longer have any purpose. «One of the strangest, most puzzling things that happened to me as my husband was battling cancer was feeling like we were losing our purpose. Clay had just finished his doctorate and was applying to work in churches and universities. We expected to keep on working in the ministry.» However, the arrival of the frightening diagnosis upset all their plans. Clay might die without achieving any of his dreams, or his health might be so weakened that it would no longer allow him to work. «A strange thought floated in my head: I believed that God had a bigger purpose for us than this. I felt devalued, but was it true? No! . . . Although a certain ministry might be valuable in my eyes, that did not necessarily reflect how valuable it was in God’s eyes.» Beyond our personal circumstances, all of us Christians have a purpose in common: to live for the glory of God. Having faith in that truth is like a buoy that keeps us afloat, no matter how hard the storm strikes. Pam decided to «daily respond to God’s kindness with faith. . . No matter what happened, she could testify of His goodness.»

We tend to measure our purpose according to the size of our plans and accomplishments. However, God sees things differently. The apostle John wrote the book of Revelation while imprisoned in Patmos (a small, rocky, volcanic island without trees). In the eyes of the world, John was a loser, an exile abandoned to die alone and forgotten. However, it was in that desolate island that Jesus revealed Himself to the apostle in a marvelous way, inspiring one of the most beautiful books of the Bible. Whatever your circumstances, live for the glory of God! His purposes do not disappear when storms come. No matter how small your life seems today, God can use you.

Lord, no matter where I am, You have a plan for my life!
The difficulty of my situation, or the scarcity of my resources, do not alter Your purposes. I believe You can and want to use me today, and every day of my life.
