PRIORITIES
«But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you» (Matthew 6:33).
Knowing human nature full well, the Son of God began His ministry by teaching the fundamental principles of His kingdom in His first official sermon. Seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness first is the rule we are invited to follow. With it, we are promised the fulfillment of our most important needs in life. This principle is simple and promising, but it can have different outcomes. Is it a way of achieving prosperity? Or is it rather the key to a life of trust in God?
- When Jesus was tempted in the desert to satisfy His own needs, while He was hungry, He said, «Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God» (Luke 4:4).
- When Job was silently suffering from his afflictions, he exclaimed, «Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him» (Job 13:15).
When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s lives were threatened because of their devotion to God, they stood firm even when they risked not being released. They confidently affirmed, «If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver u from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, 0 King. But if not, let it be known to you, 0 King, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up» (Dan. 3:17, 18).
Today, many find it difficult to obey the divine principles when their daily bread is at stake. Even more so, when their lives are in danger! When things go wrong, many are tempted to break the rules to get out of the situation. When the horizon is dark and we cannot explain the testing period we are passing through, we may be tempted to distrust God and His promises. When poverty and suffering torment us, the devil tries to destroy our trust in God, accusing Him of not stepping in and changing the situation. This is the time to make an important decision. Put God first and trust that He will take our needs and problems into His hands.
The Bible reports that angels came to help our Savior in the desert(Matt. 4:11); that God removed the suffering and «blessed the latter days of Jobs more than his beginning» ( Job 42:10, 12); that the Jewish young men were honored by the presence of God in the midst of the flames of the fiery furnace (Dan. 3:25).
Let us reflect today on this fundamental principle of the gospel, with the certainty that we rest assured that God will fulfill all of His promises, when we trust Him and walk in His paths.
