“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps” (Proverbs 16:9, NLT).
Since I live in a foreign country, I set up my phone to write in two languages: English and Spanish. To change the predictive text function from one language to another, I simply have to slide the space bar to the right or to the left. Easy, right? However, I almost always forget to do it. The resulting “predictions” have very little to do with what I intended to write. For example, let’s say I want to write the word “gracias” (“thanks” in Spanish), but I forget to activate predictive text in Spanish, the word that comes up as I type is “snakes.” Or if I want to write “everything,” but I left predictive text in Spanish on, the word that would appear is “deshacer” (“undo” in Spanish). “Food” (“comida”) becomes “donde”; “encounter” becomes “documentos” (“documents”); and “wait” (“espera”) becomes “zaguan” A total mess!
Sometimes my life is a bit like my telephone. I have perfectly planned my day: going to the gym, then to the office, and then dinner with friends. But then something happens that upsets my plans: my boss needs me to work late, or a friend calls stressed out by an urgent situation. I wrote “gym” on my calendar and “dinner with friends,” but just as if predictive text was in another language, something else comes up instead: “Working overtime” and “comforting a friend.”
As a famous English writer C.S. Lewis said in They stand together: “The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s ‘own’, or ‘real’ life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life-the life God is sending one day by day.” More often than we think, the interruptions that upset our plans are camouflaged opportunities.
Obviously, it is important to plan and keep a schedule, but next time your plans are derailed, instead of being frustrated, pray, “Jesus, is this an opportunity in disguise?” Let’s ask God to correct our “predictive mental text” and give us the ability to detect the spiritual connotation of what is happening. Although at first it might seem like an interruption or something bothersome, Jesus can teach us to decode the message correctly. Acknowledging opportunities and changing our plans when He asks us to do so.
Dear Lord, my schedule for today is open to Your plans and opportunities. You may interrupt me with whatever You want, at any time.
