IT WAS APRIL 2016. How could I forget that day? A cool breeze was blowing as we went to the bus station. We had not yet rented a car and, as tourists, hoped to see a good number of beautiful places in Peru, so we were traveling on foot. Then my little Razy got very close to a bus door, and in the blink of an eye, my daughter, my treasure, my pearl, was screaming. Her little arm had become trapped in the door.
There was screaming, pleading, and even praying. Even today, a horrible chill comes over me just from remembering that moment. However, it was in that difficult moment that my daughter and I experienced together the most impressive story of our lives. A man who was on the platform grabbed the door, which was made of multiple layers of metal. Knowing that Razyel was to me like a pearl that was about to be damaged, he pulled the bus door open, apparently without any effort, as if it were made of playdough. Then, he delicately freed my daughter’s arm. Without even giving us time to react, that man disappeared. It is incredible how a completely unknown person could value what my daughter meant to me: a pearl of great price, the most precious jewel.
Pearls become what they are because a grain of sand gets into an oyster, forcing it to defend itself by secreting a substance that, in becomes a pearl Later, in order to polish that pearl, abrasive powders are used; then it is minutely repaired and cleaned, and finally it is submerged in acid. Sudden changes in temperature must be avoided, since pearls are extremely fragile. Any improper procedure will make them lose their color and usefulness.
Think about how many circumstances must exist for a pearl to become what it is—how much care, work, and effort must be put into it. Well, that is what God does so that you and I can be precious stones. He does not spare any effort. You and I are precious stones to God because we live our lives according to His Word. Perhaps we are difficult to deal with, sensitive to changes, fragile when handled with roughness, but at the end of the process, we shine with the light of the gospel. That light is life for all the people around us, so let us not stop shining with our conduct.
