«But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him» (Hebrews 1 1:6).
JESUS WITHDREW to places where there was no one else around, so He could pray to the Father (see Luke 5:16). Moses had to flee to the desert to be able to meet with God in an intimate and personal way (see Exodus 2:11—3:22). Daniel was in the habit of praying three times a day in his house (see Daniel 6:10). Peter went up to the rooftop to pray (see Acts 10:9).
We see in the Bible a series of people of faith who had a clear pattern of prayer: they withdrew from the mundane, from the contamination of the noise and hustle and bustle of life, in order to meet alone with God. That is how they prayed or, what is the same, they entered into private communion with God to praise Him, give Him thanks, ask Him for something, or simply learn from Him.
We would do well to follow this same pattern: withdraw from the noise of the world; be alone; go to a private, special space in our home where we can pray to God without interruptions or distractions. For example, we can remodel or adapt a little corner with cushions, rugs, flowers, or Christian literature where we can meet every day with God in a private and special way. That would be a good resource to strengthen and improve our prayer life and to give a clear message to our children.
Once we are in that special space, our prayer should be based on the following:
- A balanced relationship with God in which we understand that He is a superior Being and we are His creatures who love Him and want Him to lead our steps
- A heartfelt conversation, not one of empty words and rituals: «And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words» (Matthew 6:7).
- A firm faith, because «without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is» (Hebrews 11:6).
- A willingness to forgive others and accept the forgiveness of God: «For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you (Matthew 6:14).
- Humility: «For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted» (Luke 18:14).
