«And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them» (Romans 8:28, NLT).

Things do not always go according to plan. If at the age of fifteen you had asked me where I would be today, I am sure I would have told you, «Married, with children and a couple of dogs.» Although I am very grateful for my life, it is not at all like the «plan A» I had in mind. Things do not always go according to plan! What do we do when life takes us down an unexpected path?

In her book It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, Lysa Terkeurst tells her story. After twenty five years of marriage, Lysa found out her husband was having an affair and was also addicted to drugs. Months later, still in shock, Lysa was diagnosed with breast cancer. I do not know how I would react to so much loss and so much pain, but Lysa decided to trust that God was still beside her. Reflecting on that season of her life, Lysa writes, «l am disappointed every time I find myself face to face with my absolute inability to control people, circumstances and when they take place.» What a deep thought! We add pain to our circumstances when we are not willing to yield control, when we cling to a mental image of the way our lives should be.

The apostle Paul writes, «And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them» (Romans 8:28, NLT). Everything! Not just some things, not just «plan A.» Everything! That means God’s sovereignty extends even to our tragedies.

God can even make the betrayals we experience at the hands of people we love, and the illnesses we suffer from, to help us for good, to work for our benefit. In the midst of the storm of pain and loss, we can rest in this truth: God is still in control. My storm, no matter how big it is, has not uprooted His throne from its place. God is still in control!

Dear Lord, thank You because You can redeem everything that happens to me. Thank You because nothing surprises You, nothing catches You unaware. You are still in control of the universe and my life.
