«You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ» (1 Peter 2:5, NLT).

My twin sister, lnés, lives in Patagonia, Argentina, and loves mountain climbing. One day, after an 11-mile walk on Jakob Mountain to reach the beautiful Tempanos Lake, she called me to tell me about every detail of her adventure. «You have to write about the pircas,» she told me. Since I did not know what they were, she explained they were stone markers; milestones that mark the way for mountain climbers not to get lost.

Long before there were official signs and painted marks on the trails, trekkers were guided by stone markers. The pirca towers served as a collective memory, which transmitted vital information from one trekkerto another and from one generation to another. During her walk, my sister and her friends got lost. Then they retraced their steps until they found a pile of stones, a humble and serene testimony that marked the right trail.

Our society is so individualistic that it is easy to forget how our forefathers’ decisions paved the way for us. Sadly, we rarely think about how our decisions will affect those who come after us either. Nevertheless, when walking by a pirca tower, trekkers always add another stone. It is a small gesture of gratitude; a custom that is kept up to guide those who will later come down the same trail.

We are living stones. Our decisions become pirca towers that guide others. In What Happens When Women Walk in Faith, writer Lysa Terkeurst says that Joshua learned by watching Moses. «We have the same advantage that Joshua had. We have now seen these great heroes of faith who walked before us. We’ve observed, we’ve studied, we’ve pondered, we’ve learned. Now, what kind of difference will their lives have on the way we walk?» When making decisions, let us remember the consecrated men and women who walked on the path of faith. We are not alone! Let us allow their faithful example to guide us, and with every decision, let us add a stone on the pirca tower that marks the way of truth.

Lord, thank You for all those who have given me a good example; those who through their words and prayers marked the path of wisdom. Help me to notice the influence of my own decisions today. I want to serve faithfully and with integrity. Amen.
