And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. EPHESIANS 4:32, NKJV
The day after visiting Czechoslovakia, we got a special visa so we could visit the Eastern European country called Hungary. Things in communist countries were different, so we were fascinated with many of the things we saw. After arriving in Budapest, I pulled up to a stoplight, and to our left we noticed the Turkish Embassy. At the front there was a huge gate with several heavily armed soldiers standing guard. It was an interesting sight to see so many weapons, so my friend in the backseat decided to pull out his camera and take a picture of the soldiers. Just then I pulled away from the light. A minute later I was pulled over by the Turkish soldiers. I was the driver, so I had to answer to the guard. The problem was that I didn’t speak Turkish and he didn’t speak English. We were stuck! I knew it was a long shot, but I asked him if he knew Spanish. Nope.
My French was pretty rough, but he didn’t know any French at all. I turned to the other four guys in the car and asked if anyone else knew any other languages. One of them spoke Korean. That didn’t work. My Jamaican friend spoke Patois, but that didn’t help at all. Finally, one of the guys spoke a little German, and we were relieved that the guard also spoke a little German—enough to sort out the problem. We were not supposed to take photos of the soldiers as they guarded the embassy because it was a security breach.
We apologized, and we were released. Everyone makes mistakes—some big, some small.
When we make a mistake, it’s important to own our mistake and ask for forgiveness. If others make mistakes, we are to forgive them too, even if they don’t ask for forgiveness. I know that’s hard, but when love and kindness rule, that’s what you do.
It’s what JESUS did as He hung on the cross.
