«For l will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring» (Isaiah 44:3).

Yesterday I bathed four times; the day before yesterday, only three. No, it’s not that I’m a personal hygiene fanatic. It’s just that we’re going through a sweltering heat wave with temperatures between 96 F and 102  F (which is very unusual in Watford, England). Since it is hardly ever so hot, I don’t have fans or air conditioning in my apartment, so my only survival strategy is the shower. Over the past two or three days, they forecast rain, but it didn’t rain at all. Finally, thunder was heard in the distance today and the delicious smell of wet earth began to infiltrate through the windows. Just moments later, a glorious torrential rain was unleashed, and the temperature finally dropped.

The distinctive aroma that accompanies the first rain after a period of drought has a name: petricor. When it doesn’t rain for a while, plants exude aromatic oils that serve to slow seed germination. In contact with rainwater, these oils are released (along with other substances) and produce the smell of wet soil. The petricor not only smells rich, but also acts as a chemical signal that announces to plants and animals that now they can reproduce.

God knows that we are languishing in heat, desperate for the rain of the Holy Spirit. He knows that we want to see an exponential growth in our spiritual lives that only His power can achieve. Therefore, in sensing the unmistakable aroma of the petricor, although we only see cracked earth, He tells us: «l will pour water on him who is thirsty» (Isaiah 443). Do not hesitate for a moment; the Lord will keep His promise. «All we have to do is to keep the vessel clean and right side up and prepared for the reception of the heavenly rain,» wrote Ellen G. White in Last Day Events (chapter 13, p. 194). Open your arms wide. If your soul yearns for it as a thirsty land, the Spirit will descend upon you.

Holy Spirit, my soul yearns for You like a thirsty land.
Come and fill my heart until it overflows! Reveal to me more fully the love of the Father and the Son. Show me the treasures hidden in your Word and deepen my understanding. Fill me with power to preach the gospel with humility and love.
Because Jesus promised it, I trust You will do this.
