PEACE IN HIGH PLACES

«Dominion and fear belong to Him; He makes peace in His high places» (Job 25:2).

This text is the Bildad’s brief reply; he could not refute Job’s arguments about the prosperity of evildoers. He simply made a comparison between God’s power and the sinfulness of human beings. With this interruption in Job’s speech, we come to the end of the accusatory participations of his so-called «friends» (Job 32:1). In their zeal to defend the idea that the righteous are rewarded and evil people are punished, they did not understand God nor did they have compassion for their suffering friend. What empathy is needed with those who suffer! There is no need to be cruel in order to be sincere.

Bildad made a reference to the peace and harmony that God maintains on high among the heavenly beings and which He offers to those who obey Him. The subject of man’s justification with God was incomprehensible for Job’s friends. Thanks to Paul, light was shone on this enigma: «being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus» (Romans 3:24). Although Job did not understand the plan of salvation, he kept intact his faith in God; his final answer to his friends was, «But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold» (Job 23:10).

«The Christian who loves his heavenly Father may not discern by outward providences or visible signs any heavenly favor above that given those with little or no consecration. Often he is sorely afflicted, distressed, perplexed, and hedged in on every side. Appearances seem to be against him . . . Job was stripped of his earthly treasures, bereaved of his children, and made a spectacle of loathing to his friends, but in God’s time He showed He had not forsaken His servant.»—In Heavenly Places, p. 271, September 21.

«If you are called to go through the fiery furnace for His sake, Jesus will be by your side . . . Those who love their Redeemer will rejoice at every opportunity of sharing with Him humiliation and reproach. The love they bear their Lord makes suffering for His sake sweet.”-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, ch. 2, p. 30.

Although you may not understand why sinners prosper and those faithful to God suffer, don’t distrust His promises. Keep the assurance of God’s company even in the midst of trials. When doors close, keep praising him until they open at the perfect time. No matter how cruel the circumstances, they will always be temporary.
