PATIENCE: AN ESSENTIAL FRUIT

ONE MORNING, I became impatient with my two children. It was barely 4a.m. and I was working on writing the book you have in your hands when they woke up and came to my side. constantly interrupted my progress with their presence and their commentaries, although I refused to pay attention to them so I would not lose my momentum. «Waiting patiently» was not my priority at that moment; it was rather just the opposite. However, God used that opportunity to remind me about something that I should never have lost sight of: patience is fundamental as much in the pursuit of our goals as in our personal relationships and our faith in the Lord.

A passage in the Bible that helps us develop patience is James 5. «You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord» (verses 8—10, NIV).

The apostle gave us three keys in the development of patience: 1) Stand firm. Even though certain things, people, or experiences may oblige us to move away from our priority, remaining firm in the goals we have set most recently will help us. Dedicating one morning to my children was not going to prevent me from finishing this book, so seeing the bigger picture and standing firm in it was what I needed to put things into perspective and not get impatient. 2) Don’t grumble. Why grumble? Salvation is the filter through which we must pass everything that happens to us. Those obstacles that make us develop patience bring us that blessing in themselves: they serve to make us more patient. 3) Be inspired by the men and women of God like Job (verse 11). His patience in crisis resulted in a more real and more experiential knowledge of God. Up to that time, Job had known the Lord by hearing about Him, but after that trial, he felt that he had really seen Him (see Job 42:5).

Patience is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) that, as the well-known preacher Billy Graham said, «few people, including Christians, seem to possess.» Be one of those people who possess it, because it is essential for the Christian life.

«Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain»(James 5:7)
