«Desire without knowledge is not good— how much more will hasty feet miss the way!» (Proverbs 19:2, NIV).
PERSEVERANCE
Esther enjoyed her work in Barcelona (Spain), her hometown, where she was very much appreciated by her coworkers. One day, her boss called her to his office and told her that his company had decided to send her to Buenos Aires (Argentina) for a year to start a project in that city. The girl bravely accepted. She soon became friends with a coworker, who offered her a place to live for as long as she needed.
Faithful to her Christian values, every Saturday Esther was up early and ready to go to church. The first Saturday, the family members looked at her strangely and asked, «Where are you going so early?»
«I am going to church? Would you like to come with me?»
«To church? Not at the moment. Thank you very much,» was the answer.
The girl continued to extend the invitation through some weekends, inviting her friends to go to church. When she saw that all her efforts seemed futile, she stopped commenting on the issue with her host family. So the months passed and Esther returned to Spain after completing her work assignment.
Fifteen years after her experience in Argentina, Esther received a letter from that country. It was from her friends whom she had lived with! In the letter, they told her that they had never forgotten her insistent invitations to attend church every Saturday. On one Saturday, as they walked around, they passed right in front of an Adventist church and said: «Look, that is the church where Esther attended and to which she repeatedly asked us to attend with her.» So they decided to go in. Afterward, they went back again and started attending regularly. Later on, they agreed to study the Bible and, after a few months, were baptized. But the story didn’t end there. Their nephews became so involved in the church’s activities that one of them decided to study to be a pastor.
Esther could not believe what she was reading!
Sometimes we think that everything has to go well with the first attempt. And when we have a setback, we get discouraged and stop trying. But this story reminds us to learn to be patient. This is especially true when we share our faith with others. Today we are to sow, the results will be seen tomorrow. As Solomon says, «Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days» (Ecclesiastes 11:1).
Today, put your life in the hands of the Lord in order to persevere in the preaching of His Word.
