PARENTAL INFLUENCE

Family

My son, keep your father’s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother. bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck* (Proverbs 6:20, 21).

There once was a bus full of passengers that covered a long-distance trip through a very dry and hot region. At first, the journey went without any incidents, but as the hours passed, some travelers began to complain about the heat and the long drive. Most of the people were in a bad mood and were complaining. With the heat and the deserted landscape, the journey was getting longer, more uncomfortable, and boring. In one of the seats, there was a young man who, despite the prevailing discomfort, kept a calm, happy, and bright spirit. His attitude did not seem to change as time went by. This really drew the attention of the old lady sitting next to him. “You seem happy and satisfied. Aren’t you hot? Aren’t you tired asked the lady. Smiling, the young man replied

Yes, ma’am. Of course, I am hot and tired, but I am happy because I know my parents are waiting for me at the end of the trip

There is no doubt that the relationship between this young man and his parents was positive because the thought of the coming reunion made him almost completely forget the discomfort that obsessed the other passengers. Maybe this was possible because he had in his heart and, in a way, tied around his neck, the influence exerted by his father and mother. If their family relation had been hostile, instead of joy, the young man would feel fear and apprehension at the thought of the coming encounter with his parents.

If you are a father or a mother, take the determination to build a close relationship with your children that is not centered on demands and rules. Spend time with them, be very patient, be the best possible example for them and, above all, love them in spite of their errors and incorrect behaviors. Think before speaking or reacting. DO not fall into what the apostle Paul says we should avoid, «And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord»(Eph. 6:4)

If your parents are alive, do your best to follow their teachings; try them and see how much wisdom there is within them. Obey them, unless they ask you to do something that is against God’s will. Express your gratitude to them for specific things they did for you. Finally, treasure their advice and keep them in your heart (on the inside), and at the same time, tie them around your neck (on the outside) as if these advice were a beautiful visible adornment.
