«For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect» (Hebrews 10: l).
IN HEBREWS 10, Paul explains the limitation of the sacrifices of the law. Then he emphasizes that Christ’s sacrifice was made only once and forever. He then points to the inferiority of the lambs offered in the earthly sanctuary and the superiority of the heavenly Lamb.
- While the priest had to offer sacrifices continually, Jesus Christ offered Himself once and for all. And another sacrifice was not, nor will be, necessary.
- While animal sacrifices never attained forgiveness for a sin, Christ’s sacrifice can purify us forever.
The apostle makes some callings:
- Let us approach the throne of God with certainty and without fear (vv. 19—23). 2. Let us cooperate with everyone, treating people with kindness (v. 24).
- Let us accept Christ as our intercessory Priest, for the time of God’s judgment is approaching (vv. 26—31).
- Let us acknowledge God’s faithfulness. He was, is, and will be faithful (vv. 35—37). 5. Let us be firm in our faith, with patience and thanksgiving (vv. 36, 39).
If that was the cost of one day, then, after ninety-three years, it would have been almost 20 million dollars. All that money just for air! How much more should be added for bread, water, food, a child’s smile and well-being, peace, forgiveness, faith, hope, salvation, and for eternity?
News reports gave an account of the ravage of lives, health, and economies caused by the spread of the COVID- 19 pandemic. Suddenly a different type of news: a ninety three-year-old Italian left the hospital after his health situation had improved. When he found out that the cost of using the ventilator for a day was of five hundred euros, he burst into tears, which moved the doctors, who assured him that he was not obliged to pay, because they understood his situation. His reply made more than one person cry: «I am not crying because of how much I have to pay; I can pay it. I cry because I’ve been breathing God’s air for ninety-three years, and I never paid for any of it. I haven’t even thanked Him for it. Do you know how much I owe God?»
No one should feel inferior, forgotten, or rejected. None of that!
It is definitely impossible to pay for and we would not have a way to do it.
In addition, Jesus already did it for us with His life, His death, His intercession, and His plan to grant us eternal life.
Let us live grateful, committed, and faithful lives today.
