Q: My mom lets me do things my dad doesn’t let me do, such as wearing makeup and watching certain movies.
What should I do? (My parents are divorced.)
A: It must be tough to have two parents who don’t see eye- to-eye on important issues, especially when you want to please both of them. It’s also especially difficult to have this happen at a time in your life when you’re making decisions about what’s right and wrong.
When deciding what to do, you should, of course, consider your parents’ wishes, but above all, you should consider the wishes of your heavenly Father. The Bible says, «Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right» (Ephesians 6:1, KJV). Sometimes we forget those three little words in the middle of that text that tell us to obey our parents «in the Lord.» And re-member, even though your mom may allow you to do certain things, that doesn’t mean you must do them, especially if they go against God’s standards.
We suggest that you take some time to talk with each of your parents individually regarding your feelings about this. Let your mom know, especially, that you love her and want to obey her, but that you want to follow your convictions to do what is right. Ask God, through prayer and Bible study, to help you decide for yourself what is right and wrong. And then, by God’s grace, live up to what you know to be right.
