PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right» (Ephesians 6: l).
We (L) set off to the mountain on a Sunday morning, hoping to get to the snow to have a fun day with the children. The children’s faces beamed with delight as they imagined the wonderful day ahead of them. But when we reached the end of the road, there was no snow on the mountain. We met a man who advised us to walk 200 meters ahead, where there was an abandoned mine.
«Oh, let’s have an adventure! Let go into the mountains! Who knows, maybe we can find gold or precious stones,» we said excitedly.
The children’s soon forgot about the snow as we enjoyed this new adventure. Soon, we saw a cave at the entrance of the mountain; however, we realized it was sealed, so we searched for another cave and found one 50 meters higher up. The cave was humid and dark and did not offer many possibilities of finding great treasures. But we had brought a flashlight, which our older son grabbed so that we could go deeper into the cave. I noticed that he pointed the light to the roof and not to the path below, so I shouted to him:
«Hold on, son! I’ll teach you how to hold a flashlight.»
He instantly stopped and when I reached him, I took the flashlight and pointed it in front of him. To our great surprise, we saw that there was no path in front of him! Instead, there was a huge and deep pit spreading out right before our feet.
We quickly scrambled back to safety. Getting down to our knees, we thanked God for His marvelous protection. In La Juanita site, close to the city of Rancagua, in the center-south part of Chile, we discovered something more valuable than gold and precious stones. God saved our son from certain death. I often tremble at the thought of what might have happened had he not obeyed immediately.
Similarly, obeying God’s commandments constitutes a protection for each of us. Even if we sometimes see the law as a prohibition, it is actually a great defensive and protective wall. Its principles are there to guard us against the evils derived from sin. These laws are the expression of God’s tender care for His children. Following God’s voice may bring certain disagreements, but you will never be safer than when you obey them.
If you learn to listen to God’s voice and lovingly obey His commandments, you will be free from certain death and your eternal freedom will be guaranteed. Remember that obeying our heavenly Father is worthwhile!
