PERSEVERANCE
«If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you Will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God» (Proverbs 5).
Salvador Marchisio was the first Adventist in Mexico. Coming from the United States, he arrived in 1891 to share the gospel by selling books in English to foreign residents. He then returned to the United States to take a nursing course and be more useful in his service to others. On his return, the Adventist work had been established in Mexico City and a Spanish magazine was already being published: The Messenger of Truth. So he invested his book savings and continued his mission by visiting villages to sell Adventist publications and provide health services.
On one occasion, Salvador Marchisio went to sell books at the plaza of the church La Candelaria, in the town known as Mixcoac at that time, which is now part of Mexico City. His appearance as a foreigner and the books he sold aroused the suspicion of bystanders. A prominent-looking woman, who was a devout Catholic, considered the presence of the Adventist missionary a threat to the people. So she went in search of the mayor and asked for his support in punishing the intruder. The mayor went with the lady and seized fifty copies of Steps to Christ. And to teach him a lesson, the local authorities burned the copies in the small square—Ciro Sepúlveda, Nace un movimiento [A movement is born], p. 46. But nothing could stop this man’s desire to proclaim salvation. He continued to sow the seed of the gospel for several years with great success.
Attracted by the historical places of Adventism in Mexico, a while ago I visited that place. On a Sunday morning I showed up at the old Candelaria church. There was the little square, now surrounded by houses and a huge boulevard. My imagination took flight and I could almost see the scene of this man of God trying to share the gospel with the pedestrians. What courage to leave your homeland and go to an unknown place for the sole purpose of preaching Christ! There, where Marchisio was humiliated and threatened, I bowed my face to pray to the Lord. I was so filled with emotion, I started crying. I asked Him to give me the same courage to share my faith and for my life to inspire others to serve Him as Marchisio did.
The message of the gospel is such a valuable treasure that when you discover it. you feel motivated to dedicate your life to the service of God.
