«Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding» (Proverbs 3:5, NLT).
Lot and Abram had an unusual problem: they were both so rich that the land was not enough to feed the cattle they both possessed. When their shepherds began fighting over access to water and pastures, Abram suggested they separate. Then, Lot chose the fertile plains of the Jordan valley. And who wouldn’t have chosen that green land with abundant water that looked like Eden? Honestly, the decisions I find most difficult to surrender to God are the ones that seem most obvious. If your boss offered you a pay raise today, would you stop to ask God if it is a good idea to accept it? The advantage of big decisions is that they scare us a bit. Fear leads us to make ourselves smaller, to bend our knees and pray. But we run the risk of thinking we do not need help to make small decisions. Trusting his own intelligence, in the obviousness of the situation, Lot chose the Jordan valley and moved his tents close to Sodom. «The people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the Lord» (Genesis 13:13, NLT).
I am not saying you should freeze in front of a supermarket shelf, thinking you cannot choose a cereal brand unless an angel comes down and points it out to you; however, I am convinced God wants to take part in our small decisions much more than we imagine. A few weeks ago, a friend invited me to a small garden party. She had bought a cake and invited a group of friends to spend some time together and enjoy the summer sun. I was not sure what kind of clothes to wear and asked God for His opinion. A dress I had not worn in a long time came to mind. I put it on, looked in the mirror and thought, «l must have understood wrong; this dress is too summery.» With, out consulting with God again, I changed. I chose warmer clothing and left the house. After walking six blocks to my friend’s house, I was drenched in sweat. It was much hotter than I had thought! Since it was still early, I went back home and put on the dress God had recommended. It was not such a simple and obvious decision after all.
Dear Lord, I want to trust in Your wisdom even for my small decisions, especially the ones that seem obvious.
