NOBLE TITLE

Self-Esteem

«But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light»( l Peter 2:9).

Starting with mankind’s oldest records, we can find cases of social class segregation. Unalterably, some end up in privileged positions, while others, at the other end of the spectrum, remain the poorest and most oppressed. The privileged ones, besides riches and advantages, can bear noble titles.

The most recent legacy of this practice comes from the European feudal era (IXXV centuries) when kings granted noble titles to those who gained victories in battles or intellectual or social achievements. Some titles are perpetual and, at the beneficiary’s death, are transferred to their heirs. Some countries preserved this system up to today and have dukes, archdukes, marquesses, marquises, counts, viscounts, barons, ladies, and lord who have of facial documents that legitimize their nobility. Thus, the holders of these credentials have access to private events reserved for people of their lineage and enjoy the honors and even the incomes associated to these titles.

This system does not, in any way, match with the Christian message that reminds us that we all are children of God, through faith in Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:26), that with God there is no favoritism between people (Rom. 2: 11), or that the first will be last, and the last, first (Matt. 20:16). Nevertheless—perhaps to encourage the despised Christians of his time—the apostle Peter uses some exalted titles that confirm the status of “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and His [God’s] own special people» for all of us who decide to proclaim the blessings and virtues of our heavenly Father.

In the past, there was a popular TV show called «Queen for a day.» For a day, the chosen person, usually a mother and housewife, got beauty treatments, fancy clothes and many entertainment opportunities with banquets and words of praise. During this day, the lucky-one was forbidden to do any work, since others who did the work for her.

Of course, only some women achieved the honor of being «queens» for a day. Today’s passage bestows lineage and dignity on us, not with the authority of a noble man, but by the King of the universe himself; and not only for a day but for all eternity. Think about the fabulous lineage you have for being God’s child and the privilege you have of serving Him
