NATIONAL HYMN OF THANKSGIVING

«The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?» (Psalm 118:6).

Psalm 118 is found in the center of the Bible. There are 594 chapters before it and 594 chapters after, making a total of 1188 chapters. The Bible’s exact center in this sense is verse 8 of Psalm 118, which says, «It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.» In other words, in the heart of God is the profound desire that you trust in Him, because He knows what the best formula is to overcome your fears: trust in God and all your fears will disappear, because no one can harm you there. This morning I invite you to read all of Psalm 118 in your Bible, and then continue with the rest of this meditation.

«Ps.118 is a national hymn of thanksgiving. It has been generally regarded as composed for some national festival. The psalm seems to fall into two main divisions: vs. 1—19, believed to have been sung by the procession of Israelites on their way to the Temple to offer sacrifices or to celebrate some festival; v. 19 being recited by the company as it reached the gate and requested permission to enter; vs. 20—28, the conversation between those at the Temple and those who have arrived; and finally, a mighty chorus by the entire group (v. 29).»—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 3, p. 889—Psalm 118, Introduction.

Celebrate and sing God’s blessings; this is pleasant to His heart. Consider all the times that He has delivered you. He is your strength, your strong Rock, and your song.

«We have a living and a risen Saviour. He has a care for you…. He has never proved false; He has never deceived you. He will be your guide and deliverer in the most trying circumstances. He will be at your right hand. We are every moment girded with His power and surrounded by His presence as really as were the Israelites in the midst of the divided sea. . . . Keep your soul in the love of God whatever may betide, and you will grow spiritually strong. Jesus is your loving Friend; He will take your hand and help you over every hard and trying place.»—The Upward Look, p. 276, September 19.

Praise God because that will improve your today and will change your tomorrow.
