MY TEACHER´S LEGACY

Friendship

«He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed» (Proverbs 13:20).

I still remember when Pastor Lael O. Caesar came to our college campus. He was bewildered as he gazed at the scenery in the midst of a culture that was unknown to him. He didn’t even speak our language, but twenty days later he was preaching at church in Spanish! He was a brilliant man. I knew I could learn a lot from him, so one day I approached him and said, «Good morning professor!»

«Oh, good morning, young man!» he replied.

«Excuse me, but do you need someone to clean your office? I can also translate from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. And I won’t charge you anything.»

«You’re hired!» he said smiling.

What I wanted was to be in his office. I wanted to know how he conducted his research, how he came up with his thesis, how he learned foreign languages, how he bought books, how he organized his time, how he had obtained his doctoral scholarships. And so, every time I could, I would bombard him with questions of this kind. I also had many questions regarding the Bible which he answered in some conversations. I think that over the three years I spent in his office i learned a lot about Biblical matters, philosophical and educational aspects. Providence has allowed us to meet several times and we still have a solid friendship. I still continue admiring this man of God who has given me so much throughout my life. He left a deep legacy in me that gave me the tools to face future challenges and eased the way for me to reach my goals.

You have the great privilege of deciding who your friends will be and who will influence you. Therefore, don’t neglect this matter. Don’t leave your choice of friends to chance. Open your eyes wide. I’m sure there are people near you that can enrich your life one way or another. So, it’s in your hands to seek them and try to learn from them. In most cases, they won’t look for us, instead, we have to look for them. However, it’s worth doing so, believe me. Being near a wise person is a great blessing we should make the most of.

This morning I invite you to make the most of your teachers’, parents’ and pastors’ example. I€s possible that prejudice, indifference and a bad attitude will prevent you from taking advantage of what they try to give you. However, if you approach them, you may be pleasantly surprised, and it may open up great opportunities for learning in your personal life.
