MY OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. COLOSSIANS 3:17, NKJV

In 1996 the Summer Olympics took place in the United States, near the city of Atlanta, Georgia, where my wife’s parents were living at the time. With the Olympics so near my in-laws, we decided to plan an Olympic adventure. About six months before the Olympics, I bought tickets to five Olympic sporting events.

Our Olympic adventures started by driving from Michigan to Maryland. The plan was to meet my brother and his wife and together attend an Olympic soccer doubleheader—that’s when two matches are played back to back. First, we saw a women’s match, then a men’s match. The next day, we drove from Maryland to Georgia. In the morning we took the MARTA—the public transportation system that goes from the suburbs to the city center, where the events were mostly taking place. The first day, we went to a baseball game to watch the Cuban national baseball team.

It was a lot of fun because we also got tickets for my in-laws and two other relatives, who are Cuban. The second and third days we went to a basketball and volleyball game. On the fourth day in Atlanta we went to our final Olympic event, tennis. This event took place north of Atlanta near a place called Stone Mountain. This was an exciting final day, because we got to see several professional tennis players compete. The tennis tickets were good for all events that day, so we were able to enjoy watching several well-known tennis players in action all in one place. Athletes at the Olympics represent the best athletes in the entire world. These people commit to doing their best in their sport.

I’m sure you’ve been told many times to always do your best, but today I want to challenge you not only to do your best but to do it in a way that honors GOD.
