MY BEAUTY REGIMEN

«A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken» (Proverbs 15: 13).

RECENTLY a beauty products promoter came to my home. It’s undeniable that most women have a special inclination for face creams, perfumes, oils, and as many ointments that come our way, with the promise of preserving the beauty of our skin.

It seems that this tendency is implicit in the female nature by creation; even in the Sacred Scriptures we find some references to this. When Esther was taken to the palace, before appearing before King Ahasuerus, she was subjected to a lengthy «beauty regimen»: «Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months’ preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women» (Esther 2:12).

I daresay that such care is every woman’s dream (with some exceptions). I believe that caring for our bodies is a responsibility that we Christian women must assume, without vanity or presumption, simply because we are «temples of the Holy Spirit.» However, creams and perfumes are only one part of the woman’s beauty kit; facial beauty doesn’t just depend on cosmetic products. The face is also an expression of the care we give to our characters. A beautiful face isn’t the one with the least wrinkles, but one that expresses peace, gratitude, and contentment.

Having a beauty regimen for the soul must be a daily priority. When we do, our souls are refreshed, our temperaments are softened by the oil of the Holy Spirit, and our emotions and feelings are subjected to God’s will. Today, before you begin your activities:

Join the praise of nature. Rejoice at dawn. Take a deep breath and be grateful for life.
Meditate on God’s promises; they will give you strength to face daily difficulties and not to fall into discouragement.
Imitate the birds that sing at dawn in search of their daily sustenance. Strive to do the same. Things don’t fall from the sky: you have to obtain them by working.
As evening falls, ponder the blessings received and thank God for them. Gratitude generates contentment; the person who is grateful and joyful has a sweet and restful sleep.
