MUSCLE MEMORY

«Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me» (Isaiah 46:9).

The first time I tried ice skating was quite difficult. I remember the feeling of loss of control and how the blades of the skates slipped involuntarily under my feet. To maintain my balance, I had to make a conscious and deliberate effort, calculating each movement, second by second. However, the next time, the experience was much more natural. Although I’m still learning, it’s easier every time I put on my skates. Our muscles remember! The more we repeat an activity, the simpler it becomes.

Faith is a kind of muscle memory. When we remember what God has done for us in the past, we venture farther, we let go of the railing, and balance longer. As Irish poet Thomas Moore wrote, «The ordinary acts we practice every day at home have a greater importance than their simplicity might suggest.» Although it is a gift from God, faith grows in a completely common and ordinary way—by exercising it. In fact, the great heroes of faith we admire did not have superpowers, but years of practice. Joseph was prepared for the palace in jail. Moses received his training as a leader in the desert, feeding sheep. David was hunted for years before he became king.

Practice, practice, and more practice!

Just like learning to drive, play an instrument or a new sport, faith is a kind of muscle memory. We must practice until the act of believing becomes part of us, until our spiritual muscles remember that God will never abandon us. The Dutch writer Corrie ten Boom, famous for providing refuge to those persecuted by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust, described it this way in her book, In My Father’s House: «Today I know that memories are the key; not from the past, but from the future. I know that the experiences of our lives, when we let God use them, become a preparation, mysterious and perfect, for the work He will give us to do.» Exercising faith today prepares us for tomorrow’s mission, Let’s not miss out on the training!

Dear Lord, help me face today’s challenges as an opportunity to grow in faith and to remember how You have guided me in the past, I’m never alone, so today I choose to believe and not fear.
