«And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God» (Philippians 1:9-11).
ALL REVIVALS THROUGHOUT HISTORY have begun with Bible study and prayer. What is happening in my hallway at PUC (Pacific Union College) is a revival.» These words were written by Julie Hill, while she was a nursing student and serving as a hall monitor at PUG women’s dormitory in Angwin, California. What was going on in her dormitory for Julie to come to that conclusion?
The story is told by Joe Engelkemier. He says that in August 1997, he met Julie while she was participating in the NET 98 evangelization campaign. One day, while she was having lunch, Julie remarked that she was nervous about being a member of a major committee. Then that night Joe passed by the dormitory and gave Julie several texts about the power of prayer, including a leaflet on Philippians Besides that, he prayed for her. He asked God that when Julie returned to PUC, her work as a hall monitor would be a blessing. Soon after, Joe received in the mail a message from Julie, saying, «I’ve already memorized Philippians 1:9—11, and I’ve been using it several times a day. I appreciate your suggestion.»
When the school year began at PUC, the first thing Julie did was visit each student’s room with the suggestion of setting aside time each day for prayer and the study of the Word. Soon, three non-Adventist students asked for Bible studies. Others began praying for a revival within the university. When other hall monitors learned what Julie was doing, they also began to pray and study the Bible with the ladies on their hallways.
What was the result? A revival.
Joe Engelkemier ends the story with two important questions. The first: «What if thousands of people came together to use Philippians 1:9—11 as a fervent plea for our youth throughout the whole world?» The second question: What would happen if every morning we asked God for our love for Him and for our neighbor to «abound still more and more» (Philippians 1:9)?
«The soul passion is more, more. This is the real want of the soul. We want more of the divine grace, more enlightenment, more faith.»—Our High Calling, p. 188.
Dear heavenly Father, today I ask You to bless our young people in a special way.
May their love for You «abound still more and more.» so that they «may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ.» I also ask that the passion of my soul be to receive more of Your grace, more discernment, and more faith.
