«Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy»(1 Timothy 6:17).
«I GIVE THANKS to the [poor, because they made me rich, » Rafael would say. With his head covered with gray hair because of age, wrinkles in his skin that showed the passing of time, and a broad grin, Rafael boasted about his wealth and possessions. He loved to show off his gold and diamond rings. He did not think in those moments of pride that we are not eternal in this world and that our passage through life is short and uncertain. When his wife got sick, he ran out to buy new furniture and appliances for the whole house; a stove, sofas, a dinner room set, and even a new bed. How ever, the only thing she was able to use was the bed, where she suffered until she passed away, having been unable to enjoy the new furnishings. A short time later, he also departed from this life.
Why accumulate wealth? Why boast about material possessions? Why exchange a simple faith in God for arrogant trust in money, believing that it will solve everything? Why have so much if we do not share it with those who are neediest? Why center all our lives on something so fleeting instead of enjoying them by spending time with our children, reading, praying, helping others…
If you have money, praise God for it, but do not make it the center of your life: share it and rejoice in being merciful. It is important to reach a balance in our relationship with the material goods that God gives us. Here is some wellaimed advice from the Bible: «Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’ » (Hebrews 13:5, NIV).
«Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit» (Proverbs 23:4, NLT).
«But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition» (1 Timothy 6:9).
«He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity» (Ecclesiastes 5:10).»
