MODERN ZEPHANIAHS

“I said, ‘Surely you trill fear Me, you will receive instruction’—so that her dwelling would not be cut off, despite everything or which I punished her. But they rose early and corrupted all their deeds” (Zephaniah 3:7)

The book of Zephaniah begins with deep sorrow, but ends with a song of joy and ecstasy. Each chapter of this amazing book of the Old Testament contains a practical principle for our lives.

The first of these principles is: “Be silent in the presence of the Lord God” (Zephaniah 1:7). Put this into practice when you are going through a severe trial. Another principle he shares is: “Seek the Lord [inquire for Him, inquire of Him, and require Him as the foremost necessity of your life]” (Zephaniah 2:3, AMPC). Prayer perhaps may not change your circumstances, but it will change your attitude toward them. And what about this other principle? “ ’Just wait [be patient], Says the Lord” (Zephaniah 3:8, EXB). These three principles make up a simple recipe for a successful life as a Christian: be silent when it is necessary, seek God at all times, and wait in Him, fully confident.

Not listening when the circumstances are not in agreement with our opinion is a problem of pride and a sign of an over-inflated ego. This happened to the Jews when they became so proud that they wouldn’t even listen to the voice of God when it was contrary to their desires. Don’t allow pride to undo you and make it so divine grace cannot reach you.

We need modern Zephaniahs who will give a clear, distinct, and ready message to those who perish: “A crisis is right upon us. We must now by the Holy Spirit’s power proclaim the great truths for these last days. It will not be long before everyone will have heard the warning and made his decision. Then shall the end come.”—Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, ch. 3, p. 24.

We need modern Zephaniahs who will call us to action, who will warn us that irresponsibility and complacency will lead to our spiritual fall, and to exhort us to obey God’s law as a safeguard against all moral corruptions. “A great work is to be accomplished in setting before men the saving truths of the gospel. This is the means ordained by God to stem the tide of moral corruption. This is His means of restoring His moral image in man. It is His remedy for universal disorganization It is the power that draws men together in unity. To present these truths is the work of the third angel’s message. The Lord designs that the presentation of this message shall be the highest, greatest work carried on in the world at this time.”—ibid, ch. 1, p. 10.

Be silent, pray, and wait. God hears, God knows, God sees.
