“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand» (Psalm 37:23, 24, NLT).
I have the gift, incredible ability, to get lost practically anywhere, even while holding a map in my hand! I do not know why, but it seems like my mind is distracted by anything: and add on a billboard, clouds in the sky, or someone walking their dog. I try to focus, but my mind insist on wandering. Having GPS on my cell phone totally changed my life. Now when I go someplace new, I no longer have to leave half an hour early in case I get lost. I simply enter the zip code, and my phone tells me exactly what to do and when. The real problem arises, of course, when I have no internet signal or my phone battery dies.
Sometimes we have to make decisions, we may feel as lost as when my phone battery runs out. Fear of making mistakes paralyzes us. We remain frozen in the intersection, looking every which way, but without moving a single muscle. We think that not doing anything is better than making a mistake. Not making a decision, however, is a decision; it is deciding to remain in the same place!
Pondering about our fear of making mistakes, in The Best Yes, Lysa TerKeurst writes, «If you desire to please God with the decision you make and afterward it proves to be a mistake, it’s an error not an end.» God’s sovereignty transcends our mistakes. Our mistakes and imperfections do not nullify God’s plan. «God’s promises are not dependent on my ability to always choose well,» writes Lysa, «but rather on His ability to use well.»
God is not a severe master who strikes our hands with a ruler if we give the wrong answer or who will kick us out of class. He wants to walk with us, to help us face the fear of making mistakes. He wants us to trust in Him, if we move forward beside Him with love and faith, even if we make mistakes, He will redeem them.
Lord, You love me so much that You will never abandon me! Thank You because Your plans do not depend on my always choosing well and on my never making mistakes, but rather on Your infinite kindness.
