«For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago» (Ephesians 2:10, NLT).
We are a masterpiece! The Greek word translated in this verse as «masterpiece» is poiéma, from which the English word «poem» derives. It’s a simple and moving idea: we are a masterpiece that was created by God’s hands. We are His beautiful poem. However, many times we look in the mirror and see ourselves reflected in other people’s stares and rejection, and we don’t see the poem God is writing. Instead of a masterpiece, we see an ink blot, a mess.
On days when we are tempted to doubt the Artist’s ability, let’s remember the wise words of Timothy Keller, an American writer and theologian, as quoted by Daniel Henderson in The Prayer God Loves to Answer: «What is art? Art is beautiful, art is valuable, art is an expression of the artist, the creator’s internal world. Imagine what that means. You are beautiful, you are precious, you are an expression of the Artist’s internal world . . . When Jesus gave Himself on the cross, He didn’t say, ‘I’m going to die only so that you know I love you.’ He said, ‘I’m going to die, I’m going to bleed for your splendor. I will transform you into something beautiful,… something splendid, magnificent.’ »
You and I are masterpieces, unique poems of God’s love and grace. Imagine God as a grandmother knitting a sweater or embroidering a tapestry. Imagine God as a chef preparing the most delicious desert. Imagine Him as a luthier crafting a musical instrument. Imagine Him as a sculptor, a painter, a mathematician creating a theorem . . . Can you see Him smiling over His creation, filled with joy and exuberant love? Of course! With that same smile, with that same twinkle in His eyes, God looks at you today and says, «My daughter, you are My masterpiece, you are My poem.»
Lord, You are the supreme Artist. I am Your poem, Your masterpiece.
I am the expression of the love and creativity of Your heart.
Therefore, I am unique, precious, and beautiful. I trust in Your ability
and Your faithfulness to complete the work You began in my life.
I know You won’t stop until I fully reflect your glory.
