My Father’s house has many rooms» (John 14:2).
The Seventh-day Adventist Osaka Evangelistic Center in downtown Osaka fairly vibrated with activity each and every weeknight. All of us student missionaries loved the energetic aura of the place. The something-is-always-happening feeling radiated from every doorway and down every hall. My classes were mostly on the second floor where my students would practice saying the simple sentences I tossed their way again and again and again. «I’m going to town.» «I’m going to town.» «You.» «You’re going to town.» «She.» «She’s going to town.» «They.» «They’re going to town. “Such banter echoed throughout the second and third floors. Down in the auditorium, groups of students sat with earphones on their heads, repeating pre-recorded words and phrases only they could hear.
In other rooms the sounds of pianos, guitars, and singing mixed with the muted bedlam as student missionaries and willing students prepared for upcoming Sabbath School and church musical specials.
Add to all of this the occasional tap-tap-tap of a typewriter, jingling telephones, and bursts of laughter, and—well, you get the idea.
When I read John 14:2, I have no trouble visualizing the «many rooms» in my Father’s heavenly mansion. My Father’s house is no lonely palace filled with distant echoes and the creaking and groaning of decaying wood. It’s a place of light and happiness, brimming with joyous activity and endless pleasant sounds.
Listen.
Can’t you just hear it?
«We’re in heaven.» «We’re in heaven.»
«They.» «They’re in heaven.»
«She.» «She’s in heaven.»
«I.» «I’m in heaven.
