«And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt» (Genesis 13:10).
MAKING DECISIONS is part of life; doing so correctly is a delicate matter, and to this effect we need God’s guidance. Sometimes we make significant decisions without first trying to be sure they would be according to divine will. That was what happened to Lot, and also to a young Salvadoran named Juan. Let us begin with Juan. Juan wanted to live in the United States. He dreamed of a better future in that land, which seemed so prosperous in films. To him, America was synonymous with well-being and happiness. However, his mother prayed that he would not make that decision, as she feared for the spiritual future of her son. The young man did not listen to her pleadings; he just wanted to cross the border and arrive at greener pastures. In his opinion, he would be going to the land that flowed with milk and honey. His dreams come true, but he did not know how to adapt to the coveted land. On the weekends, he drank with his new friends, who led him down wrong paths. Instead of making decisions based on the values of the gospel, he allowed sin to enter into his life. In time, he returned to his country in utter misery, downcast, and ill with AIDS. He had been excited to see a prosperous land, but did not know how to live without allowing himself to be carried away by bad influences.
Now let us talk about Lot. His case was similar: he raised his eyes and desired a land that looked beautiful. His senses traveled over the meadows and he made a decision without first putting it in God’s hands, without even asking himself what his spiritual life would be like if he lived there.» Dazzled with visions of worldly gain, Lot overlooked the moral and spiritual evils that would be encountered there. The inhabitants of the plain were ‘sinners before the Lord exceedingly;’ but of this he was ignorant, or, knowing, gave it but little weight. He ‘chose him all the plain of Jordan,’ and ‘pitched his tent toward Sodom’ [Genesis 13:13, 11]. How little did he foresee the terrible results of that selfish choice» (White, Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 12, p. 133).
Do not allow the same thing to happen to you. Yield every decision to God, regardless of how small it may seem to you.
