MAKE SPACE

«Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare» (Isaiah 54:2).

I woke up one morning with the words of Isaiah 54:2 on my mind. In this text, God spoke to Israel as a husband to his wife. Israel was depicted as a barren and sad woman. Then God told them to extend the house and not to spare expenses! She had to prepare a place for her children before they arrived. How do we prepare for the blessings God wants to give us? By making physical, mental, and emotional space. Spurgeon, the famous English preacher, wrote, «God is about to bless you. Enlarge your tents, lengthen the ropes, and strengthen the stakes; prepare for the coming blessing, because you will have better and brighter days than you have ever known. So don’t be sad anymore, but look forward to the good things that await you.»

After receiving the blessing, there must be space for it. It’s an act of faith and hope. To the poor widow who could not pay her creditors, Elisha said, «Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few» (2 King 4:3). This poor woman was about to lose her children; they would be taken as slaves in the form of payment. Then Elisha told her to make space for the blessing (and not a little space). The woman knocked on the doors of all her neighbors with the faith of a mother fighting for her children, and gathered vessels, jugs, and jars. Then she locked herself in her house, and God filled with blessings the space of faith she had created. Olive oil stopped flowing only when the last jug was filled to the top.

Sometimes, we don’t want to make emotional space for a blessing because we find it hard to let go of the pain and believe again. The Shunammite had built a room for Elisha, she had created a physical space. However, when the prophet promised her a son, she doubted. «No, my lord!» she exclaimed. «Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant» (2 King 4:16). Although her husband was old, the Shunammite woman became pregnant, as Elisha had said. Don’t limit God in what He wants to give you; make ample space for blessing!

Dear Lord, I want to make emotional space for the blessings that lie ahead.
I’m not going to focus on doubts, grudges, and disappointments from the past. Today I choose to forgive and to look to the horizon with faith and anticipation. Today I open my heart and make space for Your blessings.
