«Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea» (Psalms 46:2).
Psalm 46 is known as Luther’s Psalm, because he recited it in times of anguish. When he wrote the hymn «A Mighty Fortress Is Our God » he paraphrased this Psalm. «When Martin Luther received discouraging news, he would often say, ‘Come, let us sing the forty-sixth psalm.’ . . . Instead of mourning, weeping, and despairing, when troubles gather about us like a flood and threaten to overwhelm us, if we would not only pray for help from God, but would praise Him for so many blessings left,-praise Him that He is able to help us,—our course would be more pleasing to Him, and we would see more of His salvation.»—Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 258.
After a victory in the times of Jehoshaphat, the Israelites sang this hymn. «God was the strength of Judah in this crisis, and He is the strength of His people today. We are not to trust in princes, or to set men in the place of God…. He who has all power is our strong tower of defense. In every emergency we are to feel that the battle is His. His resources are limitless, and apparent impossibilities will make the victory all the greater.»—Prophets and Kings, ch. 15, p. 202.
One Friday afternoon it was getting late and we still had a lot left to do to have the new church in Clinton, Massachusetts, ready for its dedication the next day. We were working hard when we received the news that we still didn’t have the permit to open the church. We stopped to pray that the dedication would not be cancelled, because we were expecting many guests the next day. After a few phone calls, we obtained a temporary permit! God is faithful!
«Oliver Cromwell, it is said, asked the people to sing this psalm, saying, ‘That is a rare psalm for a Christian. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. If pope and Spaniard and devil set themselves against us, yet in the name of the Lord we shall destroy them. The Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge.’ Psalm 46 was sung in Paris by the revolutionists of 1848; in India, by the hard-pressed British in the Sepoy rebellion. It may well be the hymn of God’s people during the increasing peril of the last days.”- SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 3, p. 744.
He is your refuge and your strength: «Be still, and know that I am God » (Psalms 46:10).
