LOVE INCARNATE

» ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, ‘ which is translated, ‘God with us’ « (Matthew 1:23).

When Becky Murray began working as a missionary in a Kenyan village rescuing children who were at risk, she thought people would value her work. «However, at first they called me ‘the white witch,’ » she told me during an interview for London Adventist Radio. «l was not in a tourist area of Kenya, but in a rural area where they are quite skeptical of white people. . . . They saw that we built a children’s home very quickly, and they were convinced that it was a matter of witchcraft and that I was coming to hurt them.» The people who had come to help were so afraid that Becky’s first task was to earn their trust. She learned their language and dressed like they did. She sat in their huts to eat their food and cried with mothers when a child died of malaria. Over time, these small acts of incarnate love got the people of the village of Bumala to accept her. Years later, when they got to know Becky’s true character and her love for children, they gave her a new name: «Mama Bumala.»

Knowing that we believed the lies of the enemy, that we thought God was against us, Jesus became flesh. In order to gain our trust, He dressed like us, got hungry, and ate our food. Jesus wept and felt the same pain we do; the same fatigue. He revealed His character to us with these acts of incarnate love. Like Becky, Jesus received a new name, an honorary title: Emmanuel, God with us, made flesh and blood. Present, tangible, and sweating under the same inclement sun. God with us! Stop to consider the beauty of this mystery.

«As soon as there was sin, there was a Saviour, . . . As soon as Adam sinned, the Son of God presented Himself as surety for the human race,» wrote Ellen G. White in God’s Amazing Grace. She added, «What love! What amazing condescension! The King of glory proposes to humble Himself to fallen humanity!»— p. 23. This is Emmanuel, love incarnate.

Lord Jesus, Your love moves me even though I cannot comprehend it.
I thank You because You are not a distant God,
but Emmanuel, God with us, love incarnate.
I worship You today and my heart is overflowing with gratitude as I think of the day I will see You face to face.
