LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS

Family

«He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction»(Proverbs 1 3:3).

A part from being a virtuoso performer, Polish pianist Arthur Rubinstein (18871982), was a person who often spoke too quickly. He was even able to master many languages. On one occasion, he suffered from an acute attack of hoarseness that started rumors about cancer or some other the fatal disease. Frightened Rubinstein, went to see his specialist for a checkup. During the visit, Rubinstein closely observed the doctors face, but it did not reflect any emotion. He simply told him to come back the following day. The virtuoso, overcome by the fear of losing his life, did not sleep at all that night. The scene was repeated during his second visit. The physician kept looking and me reflecting silently. Eventually, the musician exclaim:

«Doctor, Tell me what’s going on.

I don’t mind knowing the truth. My life has been filled with satisfaction and success.

I’m ready for the worst! But please tell me.

What’s wrong with me?

After a short pause, the doctor answered:

«You talk too much!»

The Bible warns us many times of the danger of speaking too much, but not of the risk of hoarseness, but the damage that reckless words may cause to others and the problems that sometimes we involve ourselves in. Today’s verse refers precisely to the «destruction» that may come to someone who «opens wide his lips.» This proverb is very true: «Loose lips sink ships.

One of the most practical ways of displaying God’s love is by using our words in a tactful and judicious way. This is true for all types of relationships especially in the family circle where we forget about this principle due to the excessive trust and intimacy that the home offers. We should do our best by asking God to grant us the necessary wisdom to speak correctly and reasonably, then to remain silent.

In the south of Turkey, in a mountain range called The Taurus Mountains, live a species of cranes with a peculiar habit of making uncontrolled, high-pitched quacks during their flight. These sounds attract the eagles which prey on the cranes. However, it was noticed that, in order to silence their own quacks and diminish their natural impulse, the cranes pick up small stones and place them in their beaks. This prevents them from quacking and does not draw the attention of the predators

If you have problems controlling your words, invite God today in your life and He will give you the wisdom to speak appropriate words and not to say inappropriate ones.
