“[Idols] are like Scarecrows in a cucumber field; they cannot Speak;
they have to be carried, because they cannot wall! Do not be afraid of them,
for they can do no harm or evil, nor can they do any good”
(Jeremiah 10:5, AMP).
Have you ever read the horoscope? There are some people who won’t leave their house without first consulting the day’s message from the stars for them. Where does this belief in the astral map, zodiac attraction, and the horoscope come from?
Idolatry End astrology have the same origin. The nations made figures of what they saw around them and called these figures gods. They made astrological calculations based on celestial phenomena such as eclipses or the appearance of comets, concluding that such phenomena indicated the fate or destiny of the individual and of the nation. They reverenced those phenomena out of fear that they would be punished, with the hope that they would be granted some favor. Jeremiah reminded them that such gods had no power to help them nor to hurt them; they were inert, like scarecrows set up in the field to scare away the birds.
God emphasized, “’Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the Gentiles are dismayed at them’» (Jeremiah 10:2). The Israelites were to remain faithful to the Lord of Hosts and to the warning: ‘You shall not bow down to worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do [anything} in accordance with their practices. You shall completely overthrow them and break down their [sacred} pillars and images [of pagan worship]” (Exodus 23:24). Which was why King Josiah, a contemporary of Jeremiah, made a reform: “Then he removed the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem, and those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven” (2 Kings 23:5).
‘The magicians of heathen times have their counterpart in the spiritualistic mediums, the clairvoyants, and the fortune-tellers of today. Would the veil be lifted from before our eyes, we should see evil angels employing all their arts to deceive and to destroy. Wherever an influence is exerted to cause men to forget God, there Satan is exercising his bewitching power. When men yield to his influence, ere they are aware the mind is bewildered and the soul polluted.“—The Acts of the Apostles, ch. 27, p. 290.
