«For every tree is known by its own fruit.For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush»(Luke 6:44).
IN THE OLD as well as the New Testament, people are compared to trees. For example, this is what we read in Psalm 1:3: «He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.» Or in Isaiah 56:3, it says,» Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord speak, saying, The Lord has utterly separated me from His people’; nor let the eunuch say, ‘Here I am, a dry tree.'» Or in Daniel 4:10: «These were the visions of my head while on my bed: ‘I was looking, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.’ «That is, in the Hebrew culture, the comparison of a person to a tree was not something unfamiliar.When Jesus used this comparison, He added a very interesting aspect: the fruit. Hence, He said: «Every tree is known by its own fruits. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush» (Luke 6:44). The context in which Jesus says these words is also very interesting, since He Himself was being accused by the Pharisees of being a bad tree in spite of the fact that His fruits were good. That was, obviously, a great contradiction. As Jesus Himself said, «For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit» (Luke 6:43).
The Lord needs to have Christian women who are known for their fruits, that is, for their actions: «You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?’ (Matthew 7:16). Jesus Himself replied to this question: «1 am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me» (John 15:1—4).
Let us continue to abide in Him.
