LIGHTS IN THE WORLD

Family

Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2: 1 you 4, 1 5). «

The things that most disrupts the normal rhythm of a family are complaints, grumbles, and fights. Many children (and parents, too) have the habit of “polluting» the homey environment with complains that transmit a negative emotional state to the other members of the family, spreading the bad mood around the house.

Pieter Pelgrims and Thierry Blancpain are two Swiss friends who worked together in a printing industry. Despite being excellent colleagues, they both had the habit of continuously complaining about any inconvenience that happened to them. Tired of each other’s nonsense, they decided to keep quiet about trivial complaints for a whole month. And that is what they did. The result brought them such satisfaction that they decided to repeat it the following year. Other friends also joined the project and the initiators of the idea spread the initiative on the Internet. Today, thousands of people join the «complaints restraint» (complaintrestraint.com) every February. Tie),’don’t intend to completely erase complaints since one must complain about situations that are very important. It is about stopping complaints about trivial matters for which we have no control, but which frequently annoy us. For example, Blancpain an Pelgrims we miss stop grumbling when it rains, when the neighbor’s baby cries, when we miss the bus or when an unforeseen complication arises and forces us to work an extra hour

The biblical promise goes beyond obtaining well-being and satisfaction by suppressing our frustrations and directing them constructively, as this group recommends. Today’s text mentions a more valuable result: getting things done without murmuring or argument leads us to display a flawless example, to show humbleness and to shine as lights in the midst of an evil generation

To conclude this month’s focus on family relationships, we invite the reader to remember the great importance of keeping a respectful and friendly emotional atmosphere in the family. The apostle James says, «Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned» (James 5:9). The apostle Paul, referring to old Israel, says: «nor [do not) complain, as some of them also complained» (l Cor•10:10). On the contrary, we suggest, «in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you» (1 Thess. 5:18)
