LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken” Proverbs 15:13

In 1997, Roberto Benigni (1952) produced one of the most enlightening films I´ve ever seen: life Is Beautiful. The story is based on the book In the End, I Beat Hitler, by Rubino Romeo Salmoni, and tells the story of Guido Orefice, a man of Jewish origins who lives during the years before the Second World War. He doesn’t know about politics or international man who is in love with Dora, his wife, and really enjoys the Nazi stain arrives in Italy and one day both he and his son are taken to a concentration camp. His wife, who is not of Jewish origin, refuses to let them go there alone, so she forces the soldiers to take her with them. When they arrive at their destination, reality surpasses any previous imagination: torture, suffering, abuse, genocide, forced labor and destruction. What to do? Should they let themselves fall into depression and lose hope? No. The main character of the story takes a different route.

It’s impossible to change their situation, so the little boy’s father ends up accepting what’s happening. However, he tries to prevent his son from taking in all the suffering he’s surrounded by, so he tries to make him happy each day and makes him believe that everything actually a game: the Nazi soldiers belong to one team and they belong to the other; if they win, they’ll get a war tank. The boy believes his father’s words, and his father accomplishes his goal: the little boy doesn’t realize he’s in one of the most dangerous places in the world. He rather enjoys himself playing with his father, while the astonished prisoners watch them. Unfortunately, the father is killed just before an Allied task force invades the concentration camp. The father’s legacy to his son was learning to be happy even though the circumstances were adverse, because in spite of everything, life is beautiful!

What do you think? Do you believe life is beautiful? Or do you have a thousand problems that have made you believe your life is hell? No matter how bad things are going for you, you’re probably not in a concentration camp, condemned to forced labor. Change that face! Smile! Life is beautiful. Prove it! Everything depends on your attitude.
