LET YOURSELF GO!

«The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit» (John 3:8).

When we were little, my sisters and I had a secret weapon to withstand the recalcitrant summers of Buenos Aires: a rectangular, canvas pool. At three o’clock, we loved to play a game my older sister, Betina, had invented. We swam in a circle, with all our might, to create a kind of whirlpool. Then, when my older sister thought the current was strong enough, she shouted, «Let yourself go!» For a few seconds, we floated effortlessly, carried by the current.

A few weeks ago, while pedaling to work on my new bike, I remembered this game. There’s a steep street just before we get to the office. The climb is very hard, but there’s no need to pedal going down; you get there with the force of gravity. That day, however, a relentless wind was blowing. I reached the top, out of breath, with the wind and rain hitting my face. I stopped for a second to breathe, and then I threw myself downhill, as if hearing an echo from my childhood: «Let yourself go!» But nothing happened. Instead of coasting down at full speed; I remained motionless. The only solution to counteract the force of the wind was to pedal downhill.

«Jesus, what is the lesson I have to learn?» I prayed while I pedaled. Then a verse from the Bible came to my mind: «The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit» (John 3:8). “I do not want to go against Your Spirit, nor your plans for my life!» I prayed as I worked hard to move forward. «Teach me to see where you are working and to go along with that plan. I don’t want to waste time creating my own plans. Teach me to see what You are already doing and to let myself go.»

One of the most dangerous myths of adult life is to believe that we are in control of everything that happens to us, or that we should be, This is not true! The Holy Spirit must be in control. Our part is to let ourselves go, like children. In The Ministry of Healing, Ellen G. White said, «Too many, in planning for a brilliant future, make an utter failure. Let God plan for you. As a little child, trust to the guidance of Him who will keep the feet of His saints.’ 1 Samuel 2:9.»—ch. 40, p. 479.

Dear Lord, instead of making my plans and waiting for You to bless them, I want to go where the wind blows. Teach me to put up the sails of my soul, to cede control, and to move forward by faith.
