“The light shines in the darkness, And the darkness can never extinguish it (John 1:5 NLT).
WHAT DO SALT AND LIGHT HAVE IN COMMON? We could probably think of several similarities, but if there is one thing that stands out, it’s the fact that both elements have to be in contact with something else in order to be useful. The usefulness of salt is evident when it comes in contact with food, for example. As for light, it’s useful in darkness.
This quality of both salt and light is well illustrated by a scene from The Saratov Approach, a film based on a true event: the abduction of two young Americans serving as missionaries in Russia in 1998. The kidnappers had threatened to kill the two young men if they did not receive a ransom of three hundred thousand dollars.
After several days of intense agony, the parents of one of the kidnapped young men received a call from Mark Larsen, a man who lived in Denver, Colorado. About twenty years earlier, he had also been kidnapped in Argentina. Mark described what was certainly happening to the two young men in their captivity; then he asked the parents to pray, even against their will, not only for their son, but also for the kidnappers,
Toward the end of the call, Mark expressed what, to me, is the central theme of the film: “No matter how discouraging the circumstances seem to be,” he said “I want you to remember this: the longer these two brave young men remain in captivity, the harder it will be for the kidnappers to keep them under their power because light shines in the darkness.”
What a tremendous statement! It’s not only that light, no matter how small it may be, prevails over darkness, it’s also that the longer thot light shines, the greater the chances that it will dispel the deeper darkness.
God expects us to let our light shine today, no matter how small it may seem. A single talent used faithfully for the glory of God, can achieve more than five that are used only to magnify our ego. However, if we want to shine for Christ, we must first be in communion with Him. The longer we spend in His presence, the less likely we are to be surrounded by the darkness of depression and discouragement. And the reason is very simple: light shines in the darkness.
Dear heavenly Father, I want to shine today for Jesus
so that others may see the precious treasure I have found in my Savior.
I want Your light to shine in my life no matter how dense
the darkness around me may be.
