LET GOD BE YOUR DEFENDER

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, you people in whose heart is My law:

do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their insults”

 (Isaiah 51:7).

Have you ever heard the expression “learned helplessness»? It’s an expression used in psychology to refer to people who have learned to behave passively when faced with problems. They have been through so many difficult or abusive situations without being capable of improving their circumstances that they have developed a sense of helplessness and a belief that they cannot control anything that happens around them. They come to the conclusion that their best option is not to do anything.

In a certain sense, in the times of the prophet Isaiah, Israel had come to develop an attitude of learned helplessness.”Every time they tried to defend themselves, they were humiliated by their enemies. But when they depended exclusively on God and allowed the Lord to intervene, God defended them and they gained a great victory.

I have personally experienced God’s complete defense when I decided not to defend myself. “What is the defense of the people of God at this time? It is a living connection with heaven. If we would dwell in safety Tom the noisome pestilence, if we would be preserved from dangers seen and unseen, we must hide in God; we must secure the protecting care of Jesus and holy angels.”—In Heavenly Places, p. 348, December 7. ‘Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us” (Nehemiah 4:20).

If you suffer an injustice, wait, “for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you” (Deuteronomy 20:4). You will not have to move a finger because “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14).

“Put your trust in God at all times, and you will find Him able to keep you by His almighty power. He will be an ever-present, all-sufficient defense …

Those who seek God with the whole heart will find Him a present help in every time of need.”—be Upward Look, p. 348, November 30. Just obey God; He will do the rest. “ ‘You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’

Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you” (2 Chronicles 20:17).
