LET FREEDOM RING

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  GALATIANS 5:1

When I was about sixteen years old we lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania. One Sunday my parents decided to take a day trip into New York City. When I was a kid we used to go there often to visit family who lived in the Bronx. Eventually those family members moved to California, and we stopped our regular visits to New York. Now, at sixteen years old, it would actually be my first time going as a tourist, so I was very excited.

We only had one day, so we had to pick a couple of things we wanted to do and see. After crossing over the George Washington Bridge into the city, we went to the Empire State Building. We got tickets and rode the elevator to the observation deck. It’s the tallest open-air deck in the city, so it was exciting. That week they were celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the movie king Kong. In the movie, a giant ape climbs the Empire State Building, and to celebrate the anniversary they actually had fifty-foot-tall inflatable ape up there on the deck.

Next, we traveled to the World Trade Center to see the twin Towers and walk around the plaza at the bottom. Unfortunately, many years later, on September 11, 2001, terrorists destroyed the twin Towers and killed thousands of innocent people. Our last stop that day was a visit to the Statue of Liberty. We went down to Battery Park and got ferry tickets to Liberty Island. After walking around the base for a while, our turn came to go inside the copper statue and climb the 354 steps of the circular staircase all the way up to the forehead. The space up there was a lot smaller than I thought, but it was exciting to look out through the crown at New York harbor.

The Statue of liberty is a symbol of freedom. When God created us, he proved his love by giving us freedom to choose. Of course, Satan wants to trick us into giving up our freedom and being slaves to sin.

Ask God each morning to free you from Satan’s temptations.
