«And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together» (Romans 8:17).
I always liked Joan Manuel Serrat’s songs and lyrics. The song «Wednesday’s Will,» makes us think about the intangible legacy we leave: not the houses, not the cars, but the emotional and spiritual heritage we can forge. Serrat sings, «l leave four regrets, the rain that I contemplate and does not make me wet. .. I leave the blue creak of my hinges and a slice of my slight shadow.» What is your legacy? What is the spiritual heritage you will leave to your family and friends?
One of my best friends said she took her responsibility to heal emotionally more seriously once she started having children because she didn’t want to will to them her pain or fears. I think she was very correct because as Richard Rohr said in Things Hidden: «If we do not transform our pain, we will certainly transmit it. If we do not find a way to transform our wounds into sacred wounds, we will invariably surrender to life and humanity.» This idea of turning wounds into something sacred moves me. God not only heals us, but also transforms our wounds (the same ones that, untreated, would transmit pain to the next generations) into a holy inheritance. The scars tell a glorious story! When God heals us, we go from spreading pain to spreading hope, from multiplying trauma to transmitting vitality.
As well as physical inheritances, spiritual inheritances must be planned. A holy legacy is never the product of chance. It is essential to reflect, to realize what we receive ourselves and what we want to transmit. It will be necessary to pray, forgive, heal, and be patient with the process, but also dare to tell the story. Many times, it is precisely through an account that a legacy passes from one generation to the next (see Joshua 4:6, 7). The stories of our healed wounds, answered prayers, and adventures with God will be an initial deposit in the bank of faith for generations to come.
Dear Lord, the greatest legacy I can leave is spiritual, not physical. Consequently, I’m asking you to heal my wounds and transform them into sacred scars.
I want my life to reflect the power of Your redemption.
I want to tell my family everything You have done for me.
